South Kawishiwi River Campground is located in the Kawishiwi Ranger District of the Superior National Forest approximately 10 miles outside of Ely in northern Minnesota and near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It is an ideal place to relax while enjoying fishing and other recreational activities.
South Kawishiwi River Campground is located in the Kawishiwi Ranger District of the Superior National Forest approximately 10 miles outside of Ely in northern Minnesota and near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It is an ideal place to relax while enjoying fishing and other recreational activities. The campground features 31 shaded campsites (each with a picnic table, fire grate, and tent pad), boat landing, swimming beach, picnic area, and nature trail. There are vault toilets, and a hand pump as well as an electric pump is available for drinking water. An enclosed log pavilion is available for summer rentals for events such as weddings and family reunions. Some campsites may be reserved, while others are for drop in campers only. The Kawishiwi River provides access to Birch Lake to the south and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to the north. Firewood is available for purchase and with at least one day's notice canoes can be rented for $20 per day. South Kawishiwi River Campground is a National Forest Campground operated by the Ely Area Campground Concessionaires. The operating season starts May 5 and concludes September 30.
