#49 7/2 Snowbank Lake

I’ve never been to this lake in all of the time I’ve lived in Ely. It’s a big lake and I’ve always wanted to visit it. There is nice hiking trail that is about 25 kilometers that starts close by. I want to come back and do an overnight hike here in late September when the leaves are changing.

This is a favorite ski lake for me so I wanted to swim here at some point. I have now swum in most, if not every, lake I’ve skied on in Ely that is accessible by foot, bike or car. I would have to go through these lakes by canoe to get to other lakes that I’ve skied on.

Swam in Lake Vermilion on the way to Virginia today. I followed the Hoodoo point exit off of 169. I would never have gone there if I didn’t have this goal. Everybody from this area should be able to say they swam in Lake Vermilion.

The weather took a turn yesterday and the temperature has dropped drastically. It is also very windy today. As my friend Kitty and I sat in my car with the heater on high, we wondered what we were doing out today. We finally got the nerve to run to the water and jump in. The water was no colder than yesterday and we ended up grateful that we had come out. We probably swam for 20 minutes.

I saved this lake for a party I was invited to at my friend Sarah’s today. She sets more goals for me than I do myself. For some reason I feel challenged by her goals and in the past these goals have taught me many news things and have provided many new adventures. She is the one who challenged me to do a triathlon this year. This goal led me to this goal of swimming in 50 lakes in 50 days.

After swimming at Farm Lake the other day I felt a need to swim in some of the lakes I skied on this winter. Moose Lake was my entry point into the Boundary Waters. I skied through Moose Lake, Newfound Lake, Sucker Lake, Prairie Portage, Inlet Bay, Basswood Lake, up to US Point, through Wind Bay and Wind Lake and back to Moose Lake. My good friend Kitty accompanied me today too. We drove out the Fernberg and parked in the Wood Lake parking lot. We hiked in to the lake. I had to try to find this lake again. I tried to find it on my bike about 25 or 30 lakes ago and spent about 5 hours on a wild lake chase. Went to Virginia today and brought a map with me to try to figure out how to get to this lake. Maps are turning out to be very helpful! I followed a dirt road for quite a while past about 100 private driveways. I finally found it and it turned out to be worth the drive.

I rode my bike out Highway 1 towards the North Shore about 7 or 8 miles. Then I took Blueberry Road about 3 or 4 miles until I came to the bridge where Blueberry Lake runs into One Pine Lake (at least that’s what I’ve been told). Another bike ride ten or so miles towards Tower to Robinson Lake. There is a nice little driveway right off of the road that leads you to a private little beach. It’s actually nested practically on the road. I was able to jump in and swim about 10 yards from the road, but was completely shielded from motorists passing by. Fun!

Back on my bicycle to find my lake today. 7 1/2 miles towards Tower on 169 to a sign that says Railroad and then about a mile down a dirt road. My mountain bike was perfect. Another drive-to lake today. As many times as I’ve passed the Tofte Lake sign, I’ve never been to that lake. Very beautiful. I got there just as the sun was setting. I could see campers on the other side and felt a little bit envious.
