In case there is even a shadow of a doubt, we would like to make it clear Ely is a great place to live and there certainly is room for a few more families.
A local Realtor asked last week if we would be willing to speak to a potential new resident, answering questions on the area’s future, in specific the larger mining-related projects.
It was an interesting conversation, covering topics such as the proposed nonferrous mining projects being advanced by Polymet and Franconia Minerals.
What went unsaid and basically assumed by both parties is that Ely is a great place to live and raise a family.
The concern was how would it continue to be able to support things we take for granted now - such as an independent school district, a local hospital and various businesses in the community.
We believe that no matter what nonsense we hear from Sierra Club members in Duluth with no background in mining or its potential environmental impacts, there will be nonferrous mining in our area and it will be done in a way that will be safe, both for the people who work there and for the ground that it impacts.
The maze of permitting requirements these mining companies are currently going through cover issues that were never even thought of 20 years ago.
That’s good, we want agencies such as the DNR and MPCA to look out for the public’s health and the environment.
And we also understand the economic issues surrounding those needed minerals. As the value of the minerals such as platinum, palladium and copper continue to rise, the cost of removing them cleanly and efficiently is mitigated.
There will be jobs created in the Babbitt area, either by Polymet, Franconia or through the Mesabi Nugget project, of that there is no doubt. When will they happen? That, we hope, is sooner and not later.
Area community leaders meet to discuss the impact of these projects. They talk about housing needs, schools, infrastructure and even the social impacts of new families moving into the area.
These meetings will prove to be beneficial in the future when the first of these proposed efforts reaches a level of economic feasibility and passes all of the required studies and permits.
The Ely area will be part of this because we offer a great quality of life in a community that has amenities others do not.
This gentlemen was concerned about affordable housing, specifically outside of the city limits. He was talking about lakeshore, an area where the market has skyrocketed.
But our housing stock in and around Ely is really very affordably priced. This is not Aspen where the people who work in the shops and businesses have to be bussed in because they can’t afford to live there.
If you want to live on a lake, Ely offers that as well, just at a much higher price. But we believe the total package available here is worth the price. Jobs will be created here, families will move in and Ely will flourish.
